Less than 1% of the planet surface comprises freshwater, yet it is this freshwater - our rivers, lakes and wetlands - that sustains all life outside the ocean. Rivers are the arteries and veins of our landscape - quenching, nourishing, filtering, transporting, supporting life, providing places of beauty, serenity and spirit.

Human settlement has through necessity always followed the river. River health is critical to sustainable supply of safe water and to food production, and has massive implications for the ecologies, communities and economies which depend upo them. Issues of pollution, diversion, overfishing and overuse occur in undeveloped and developed countries, rural and urban rivers. The need for conservation extends beyond basic environmental objectives to a matter of survival, regardless of geography and politics.
